Left over cooked grains and beans!

Once the gains/beans are cooked, there is only one thing to do, reheat and use the same way, right? No. There are many ideas to put that left over grain or bean to use after it’s been cooked. When I over estimate the amount of grains to actually cook, I could jut through them away or try to store them in the refrigerator until they mold and HAVE to get thrown out, or I could try to find another idea to use them.

So you have cooked a huge pot full and have a lot left over. What do I do with:

Left over oatmeal?

This is a grain that is very versatile even when cooked. Add to muffins (reduce liquid), add to cookies, or add to meatloaf.

Left over grits?

Let them sit in a shallow pan and cool in the refrigerator, then slice into strips. Fry the strips in butter and drizzle with maple syrup!

Left over cornbread?

“Crumble in” – crumble it into a bowl, pour warm milk over the top and sprinkle with honey or brown sugar for a warm breakfast cereal from whole grain cornbread.

Left over pinto beans?

Add to soups, mash for Mexican dishes and either mix with ground beef or just the seasonings in the beans for a vegetarian burritos.

Left over barley?

Of course in vegetable beef soup, but also chop some dried fruit and nuts add them to the barley with some honey and you have another warm breakfast cereal.

The possibilities are endless when faced with left over cooked grains or beans….just use your imagination!
